Ideas for Technology Rules for All Classrooms:
Elementary:
- After visiting the computer, cross your name of the list. Remember you can only visit the computer center once a week.
- Have a stack of cups at the computer center. When a student sees his or her name, the student knows it is his or her turn.
- Set a timer for 10 - 15 minutes. When the timer goes off, the students know their time at the computer is finished.
- Reward students with iPad/Computer bucks. Then, students can cash in bucks for iPad/Computer time.
- When multiple tablets are being used, announce "home, sleep, center" to notify students that it is time to put away the tablets and to remind them how to do it correctly.
- When the green sign is on the board, you may use your personal device. However, when the red sign is up, you must put your phone away.
- Have students place cell phones in numbered slots on an organizer to avoid unnecessary cell phone use in the classroom.
- Enable the guided access feature on iPads to limit the number of apps a student can use at one time.
- Create QR codes linked to websites you want students to visit to prevent wasting time searching for the correct sites.
- If students do not finish their daily work on the computer, then they complete their work on paper the next day.
- Do not go to any sites until instructed to do so.
- Spell check and proof read before printing.
- Print jobs going to the color printer must be approved by the teacher.
Tips to implement rules successfully:
- Establish the technology rules in the beginning of the year.
- Model the behavior you are asking of the students. If red cell phone sign is displayed, have your phone put away as well.
- Implement real-world consequences. For example, have a student apologize to the class when using phone/tablet/computer inappropriately.
